ELA instruction is based around Reading, Writing, Speakin, Listening, and
Language. These 5 components are
naturally intertwined and thus, each year students are expected to have a more
sophisticated grasp and understanding of each. The importance of these
components is only amplified when considering how heavily aligned they are with
other subjects such as science and history. At each grade level, the content
for subjects such as science and history become more complex requiring higher
levels of ELA skills. For example, a 5th grade student must be able
to read at a 5th grade level in order to take what they read from 5th
grade history book and transfer it to paper or verbalize it in a presentation.
Due to the increasing difficulty of other subjects, it seems a necessity that these
ELA skills are challenged to improve at every grade level even through college.
