Comprehension Lesson

Title of the lesson: Comprehension through Illustration
Length of the lesson: 50 Minutes

Central focus

Students will practice good comprehension strategies through group discussion and visual modeling of the plot of a story.

Knowledge of students

  • Students have experience reading a text and retelling the plot of the text.
  • Students have experience working in groups
  • Students know how to use their imagination to create an original drawing.

Common Core State Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.1
Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Support literacy development through language (academic language)

  1. Describe key plot details

Learning objectives

  1. Will function as part of a group.
  2. Will be able to recall details of a story.
  3. Will be able to create a visual model (drawing) of a moment in the story.

Formal and informal assessment

Informal Assessment: Students assessed on the accuracy of their story details and the relevancy of their illustration to a moment in the story.

Instructional procedure

  1. Students watch/listen to the ebook “Crazy for Canada”.
  2. Teacher will place the students in groups and ask the groups a few basic questions about the story. Examples include:
    1. “Who was the main character of the story?”
    2. “What country did he travel to?”
  3. Students will be asked to work with their group to think of and list as many of the places that Lester traveled while in Canada.
  4. After 10 minutes, the groups will share their answers and the teacher will list all of the places on the board.
  5. Students will choose one of the locations that Lester was in and draw a picture of Lester in that location.
