I
chose the KWL chart because it is something that I have experience using. As a
YMCA after school counselor, we were in charge of “Academy” for our specific
group. Academy is a 9 week long unit on a particular topic that culminates in a
final presentation. At the beginning of each Academy, we filled out a KWL
chart, leaving the L blank until the end of the Academy. For example, my group
did an Academy on Pittsburgh because I am from Pittsburgh and the students knew
little to nothing about the city. The KWL chart was a great resource because it
gave the student some say in what they were learning as I used it as a guide
for the lessons I would develop on Pittsburgh. For example, the students wanted
to know if there were any professional sports teams in Pittsburgh, so I
developed a lesson on the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins.
